Panerai 557 lefthand dive tribute to the history of Italian navy seal
Panerai was one of the first brand and watches that hit the internet by storm, "Paneristi Forum" is the very first watch forum that every exists in the watch community, the hype, the wrist shot, and paying above retail price all started here. but we go back to the 40s' when Panerai was making diving instruments to the commercial diver and then later on to the Italian navy seal.
It was the first watch that attached to the wrist of a person and went into the water; back then, Panerai still can't manufacture the movement, but the navy requested reliable and accurate watch, so they use pocket watch movement from Rolex to fill the application.
it's very crucial to the diver to know the exact time when they're in the water and also for the timing of the attack and other operations. later on, the navy request Panerai to make the watch for the right wrist so that they could wear the other instruments needed for their missions on the lefthand compass and depth gauge, and is also very useful to the diver that lefthanded.
back in the day, watch design always been for usability, and functional trends and fashion are still not cut it, only for a practical purpose.Today the legends are back again with the PAM557, keeping everything accurate to the original, from the size to the dial and the case design Panerai called the model 1950s'.
47mm in diameter, the PAM557 fitted with the PAM cal.P3000 3 days power reserve, the sandwich-style dial is also used giving a 3d look on the dial, and the best part I like is the plexiglass used on the watch to give it a very vintage looks and will be scratch over time and have a unique look form used.
The cal.P3000 is also a manufacture caliber that features the looks of a mid 20 century Panerai pocket watch movement with a 3 quarter bridge form, complemented by a dual anchored balance bridge, with a free-sprung index. Those two features, free-sprung and full balance bridge give the watch a robust shock resistance.
in conclusion the PAM 557 is a very unique piece, and you will not see it that often, the 47mm size might sound overwhelming but is the low profile of the 1950s' case make it wearable on midsize wrist and will definitely look good on large wrist, I always found that when I put big watch on with long sleeve jacket or denim to cover up the arm, it will look well portion and look cool, Panerai today still and is an excellent quality watch and will serve you for lifetime.
