3 Generation of the Rolex Day-Date

One of the most recognizable Rolex of all, the Day-Date character recognize by the Day and Date on the dial. The Day-Date also has a very long history dated back to the 40s'; it might be the first automatic watches with Day and Date complication. The Day-Date has been on many world top leaders and influencer wrist. It also has been on every President's wrist since the 40s' till it adopted the nickname "The President Watches."

We have here the three generations of the watch; the design remains the same since first shown in the catalog, only a few changes here and there. But the most crucial change is the movement, first-generation caliber 1556 second 3055 and third 3155.

The first Day-Date here is the ref.1803 the sweet spot for anyone who wants to enter the vintage Rolex realm, the character of the ref.1803 is the most unique of the three; it has what so-called " Pie-Pan" dial named by the collector, it's a shape like a bottom of a Pan given a dimension to the dial, the crystal is plastic this also gives the watch another charismatic to overall looks from the raise up crystal.

But having that look comes with the price when you are setting the Day and Date, setting the Caliber 1556 you have to advance the hands clockwise past midnight to change the Date, once you fixed the Date you have to wind the hands counterclockwise to set the Day, this might take some time to set the watch when your not wearing it every day, this movement also know as "Non-Quick set" movement.

Rolex then updates the movement to 3055 in Ref.18038, the second generation. Now we can set the Date window with the crown pulled out on the first position, but setting the Day, we still have to wind the hands counterclockwise.

In conclusion, which one is the one for you? It depends... sometimes we enjoy the art of dysfunctional or the lacking of functionality of something, someone enjoys taking film photography and enjoy the long process of making a photo instead of instant photo from a digital camera, someone appreciated handmade over machine-made. It is about what connects us to this little object, the story, the look, and the feel, but you can't go wrong with those three classics! Available now at Dunaliga.
